2012 Goals

The start of the 2012 baseball season is only a few weeks away. All summer and fall kids have been working on there game, hitting buckets of balls, throwing long toss until there arms burn, running sprints in the hot sun, and lifting weights until they can't lift anymore. If  you are one of the ones who put in the work, and if you didn't it will show. This is the time to take a minute and make some goals for the season. By now you have played enough games, and seen enough players to know where you are and where you need to be. Make some small goals on what you want to accomplish, make these your goals and don't worry about what the next players doing. The secret to making goals is to not make them to hard or to easy. Here are a few examples of some baseball goals.(everyone's will be different) hit xxx avg, hit xx homers, steal xx bases, hit xx rbi's. Making goals make you strive for more and is a good practice to implement into all aspects of your life. I hope each and everyone of you have a great season and I will see you at the ball park!

Fall ball is over -- time to workout

There is a old saying that champions are made in the off season, and I have to agree with that 100%. If you look around any sport the cream of the crop also has a reputation of  being the hardest working. Yes, there will all ways be that one exception to the rule, but I always tell kids that it is all ready hard to play on the next level no matter what level you are on, and do you want to put you hopes on being the exception to the rule when someone probably is as talented  as you with a great work ethic challenging you for your position. I tell kids that if you are naturally talent work hard and don't look back, and I tell the kid with not as much talent to work hard and you will catch a lot of the more talented kids that don't put in the work. Talent will only take you so far, so this is the off season lift those weights, run  those sprints, eat right and when the season rolls around you will have put your self in a position to succeed.

Baseball enjoy the ride

All over america there are little boys on the side of  houses and buildings throwing a baseball  against the wall dreaming of the day that they will have a shot at the big leagues. As a parent I understand that this is a long shot but achievable goal. It goes something like this, t-ball a kid may be the best hitter at his age you have ever seen and then coach pitch comes and then he can't hit a moving pitch. The next kid was a great pitcher until about 13 and then they moved the mound and bases back and he is never the same. The next kid who has led the team in homers for the last 5 years find out the kids are throwing curve balls now and he can't hit one so he is done. We can not forget the kid who has got to high school and has never had a coach other than his father and it shows when he gets cut from the team. We can't forget the kid who has always been a star and now he is in the 7th and 8th hole on varsity and the reality that it is over hits him and he is done. The things we have talked about is only until high school baseball but it gives you a idea of how hard it is to make it,so sit in the stands and enjoy the moment because nothing is as hard as hitting a baseball. If you don't agree what else in your life can you succeed 30 percent of the time and you are great at what you do?  Hsbaseballdad wants to hear your opinion so voice it below and tell others or give a tweet about this blog.

Back to school and back to the diamond

The kids are getting school supplies and new clothes excited and looking forward to a new year, hoping that this year will be better than last year. This will be good for most kids until about the end of October and then they will be doing the Christmas vacation count down.  This time of year is also fall ball time when  kids of all ages start hitting the diamond again after a long and hot summer of playing baseball. The question I want to ask you is when kids are starting to play ball every summer starting at 4 years old is there a such thing as to much?  I am a super fan of baseball at all levels and can't get enough of it but with baseball during the school year, summer , and fall is that to much on  young bodies? I understand that kids on the high school level need to play more games especially  the kids that have a desire and talent to play in college, but when we have kids in the lower grades throwing there arms out before they ever throw there first high school pitch it has to be talked about. I am also seeing some kids that were great in the early years start to burnout from playing so many games for so long. Don't get me wrong most kids who play baseball believe in let's play two and I am one  who will sit in the hot sun and watch both games but this blog is about the good, the bad and the ugly of baseball, so lets talk about it.

How will the bbcor bats change the game

This year in college baseball the new bbcor bat was introduced. These bats were put into the game because the    aluminum bats had to much pop and were a safety issue for the players. The college game was changed drastically because homeruns are way down. Next year the high schools have to change over to the bbcor bat. My question to you is how will this change the high school game? Will the game be less exciting with less homers? Will coaches start picking faster kids with high batting averages instead of the big kid who use to hit homers with aluminum bats? Will colleges change the way they recruit for the reasons mentioned? We want to here from you. Go to hsbaseballdad.blogspot.com or give me a tweet!
